How you will pay

How to fill it in

  1. Exchange rate: Use your bank's rate for today. When you send tuition, the bank's selling rate applies, which is a little above the market rate.
  2. Tuition fee: Find the international student fee for your course on the university's official website. In some countries public universities charge little or no tuition but still charge a semester fee; add that up for the year.
  3. Living cost: Most universities publish an estimated monthly cost of living for their city. The minimum amount the government expects for a student visa is another good guide.
  4. One-time costs: Visa fee, university application fees, language tests, a one-way ticket, and the rent deposit and essentials you need on arrival.
  5. Looking ahead: On courses longer than two years, rising fees and a weaker rupee can add a lot. Look at the trend of the last few years and enter a cautious estimate.

Costs families often miss

  • The bank's foreign payment charges and rate margin
  • TCS on money sent abroad (the rules change; ask your bank for the current rule)
  • Translation, attestation and courier of documents
  • In some countries, a medical test or biometrics fee for the visa
  • Winter clothing for cold countries
  • Books, laptop and course materials
  • One or two trips home

Proof of funds: not a cost, but essential

Many countries check that you have enough money for study and living before they issue a student visa. Some require the amount to be deposited in a special account that releases a fixed sum each month. The money is spent on living costs counted above, but it has to be shown in full at the time of the visa application. Plan your cash flow for that, and take the amount only from the official visa website of your country.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator give the exact amount?

Today's selling rate of the bank you will send tuition through. For longer courses, also add a yearly fall in the rupee under Looking ahead.

How big an education loan should I take?

The calculator shows how much is left to arrange after savings and scholarships. How much to borrow depends on your income, the interest rate and likely earnings after the course. We are not financial advisers; talk to a qualified adviser before a big decision.
